Homemade Fruit Fly Trap

I am embarrassed to tell you guys how many fruit flies I came home to last night because I am not as filthy as these flies seem to suggest, but OH MY GOD it was bad. After furiously taking out the trash and scrubbing any food residue off my kitchen counters, I looked up a fruit fly trap and found easy solution to get rid of them.

Sidenote: What a weird thing to photograph. Forgive the lack of artistic detail in my photo of vinegar and dead vermins.

Anyway, if fruit flies have invaded your home and you want a super quick and easy way to get rid of them, here’s what you need:

Apple cider vinegar
Dish soap
Small bowl or jar
Plastic wrap (optional)

Put 2 drops of dish soap into the bowl or jar. Fill the bottom with apple cider vinegar. Place the plastic wrap over the top and poke a few holes in it. The flies love the “sweet” smell of ACV and will flock right to it. As soon as they touch the ACV they will float to the bottom.

I actually didn’t use the plastic wrap, but once I realized they enjoyed hovering around the rim before taking the plunge into eternal damnation, I added some water to fill it to the top so all they had to do was dip a toe in and die. It worked fine, but next time I will probably use plastic wrap so I don’t have to put as much in there.

If you don’t like killing bugs, I’m sure there is a remedy that also allows you to trap them and set them free. I have no mercy for tiny pests so if you’re PETA or the ASPCA, please don’t torture me with sad puppy videos. I just want to eat my produce in peace.
