Shake your money maker, like someone is gonna pay ya

I have been looking for an excuse to use that line ever since I heard that song. Cracks me up.

And now I have one. Today and tomorrow I will be out of town for State Drill Team.

No, I do not perform. I am far too old and un-flexible for that. I am a volunteer assistant coach up at the high school and it is something that I truly cherish.

This year, the girls I had as freshman my first year will be seniors. It’s amazing to see the evolution that have gone through as people.

And really, that’s what it’s about. Both with coaching and teaching CCD, I have this amazing opportunity to watch kids grow up. And to be a part of it.

As flippant as I am here, I take the responsibility of being an influence on these kids – especially these young girls – very seriously. It makes me feel like I am an active part of making the world a better place.

Because amidst telling them to point their damn toes and straighten their arms and stop counting out loud while they dance… we’re teaching them more. We teach them about respecting themselves, and each other. We teach them what it means to be a part of something bigger than themselves. We teach them about commitment and hard work. We teach them about what it means to be women in today’s world.

Lord I am grandiose sometimes.

The most important thing I think we do for these girls is give them a safe place. A safe place to be themselves while being accountable for their actions.

Which brings me to my next point…

THIS blog? This is a safe place. It’s a safe place for me – to vent and rave and share and be me, whatever me I am on any given day.

And it’s also a safe place for all of you. A few posts ago, some of my commenters – some of my most beloved in fact – had a little disagreement of opinions.

And I want you ALL to know, that is more than OK with me. You can disagree – with me and with each other. And I will never censor you, or think less of you for it. I may think you are a fucking idiot for what you think. 🙂 But I will defend to the death your right to disagree. And I am entirely capable of continuing to adore people I disagree with. And I trust in most of your abilities to do the same.

Please, never feel like you have to kiss my ass, or say I’m right, or keep your mouth shut.

Because here? Here you can always say what’s on your mind – the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Just be prepared for others to do the same. Because THAT my friends, is what a free society is supposed to be all about.
